Norwich University was founded in 1819 by Alden Partridge at Norwich. Initially it was regarded as “The American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy." In 1825, the institution was moved to Middletown, Connecticut. However, owing the Connecticut’s refusal to grant a charter, the institution was moved back to Norwich, Vermont.
In 1834, the institution received a charter from the State of Vermont resulting in the recognition of the institution as Norwich University. In 1860, the university savored the honor of forming Alumni Association. In 1880, the name of the university was changed to Lewis College by Vermont Legislative Act. However, it again attained its previous name of Norwich University in 1884.
In 1907, Electronic Engineering department was formed by the university and in 1933 an Academic Honor Society was formed which was named as Epsilon Tau Sigma. In 1949, Business Administration major instituted. In 1972, Norwich University merged with Vermont College. In 1990, Five-year baccalaureate degree program in Architecture started and in 1993, Kreitzberg Library was opened. In 1997, engineering, math and science clubs were opened. In 2007 the ‘Wise Campus Center’ was completed.
Accreditation is reckoned as a standard against which the schools, colleges and universities are evaluated in context of the quality of education, and the operating practices.
In order to confirm the high standards of educational excellence, the accreditation agencies continuously evaluate the integrity, continuous improvement, accountability and open communication of the institutions which reside on their rosters.
The accreditation instills confidence in the educational community and institutions' constituencies. In order to evaluate the transfers of credit and applications for postgraduate study, the colleges and universities also rely on the accreditation status.
